Persona 5 Royal is a video game developed by Atlus. The game is chronologically the sixth installment in the Persona series, part of this bigger Megami Tensei franchise.
Persona 5 takes place in modern-day Tokyo and follows Joker following his move to Shujin Academy because of being placed on probation for an assault he was falsely accused of. During a school year, he and other students awaken to special powers, becoming a group of covert vigilantes known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. Preparatory work began during the development of Persona 4, with full development beginning after Catherine’s release in 2011. First announced in 2013, Persona 5 was postponed from its initial late 2014 launch date because of the game not being completely finished. The game’s topics revolved around attaining independence from the constraints of contemporary society. At the same time, its narrative was strongly inspired by picaresque fiction and the party’s Personas being based on renowned literary outlaws and rebels.
