Horizon Forbidden West launching in February 2022
Horizon Forbidden West is the sequel to 2017’s action-packed hit Horizon Zero Dawn. It will be available on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4, according to Guerrilla Games. This was announced at Gamescom: Opening Night Live.
This is a slight delay. Guerrilla Interactive Entertainment and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment previously stated that they would release the game in 2021’s second half. Pre-orders will be accepted by Sony starting Sept. 2.
In May, Sony showed Horizon Forbidden west with a 14-minute gameplay clip during the State of Play. Guerrilla stated that the game had just reached a significant development milestone and was now on track for 2021. However, Guerrilla noted that the studio could not set a release date.
“It’s no surprise that our teams were hugely impacted by the global pandemic; we have been adjusting to new workflows, protocols, and other challenges, while keeping our teams safe and prioritizing a healthy work/life balance,” game director Mathias de Jonge said during Wednesday’s Gamescom: Opening Night Live stream.
Guerrilla managed to soften the blow with the unexpected release of a patch Horizon Zero Dawn. Available now, the free update adds support for a targeted frame rate of 60 frames per second — with the same 4K resolution achieved via checkerboard rendering — when playing the 4-and-a-half-year-old game on PS5.
Horizon Forbidden West will see Aloy attempting to save the Earth’s biosphere from two threats: the “collapsing biosphere” due to a “red plague” that has “choking wildlife, starving animals, and tribes” and extreme weather events such as “massive supercell thunderstorms,” de Jonge stated at the unveiling of Horizon Forbidden West in June 2020 at the Sony PlayStation 5 reveal event.
