Criterion kicks off a 4K Blu-ray collection with Citizen Kane and Mulholland Dr.
The Criterion Collection is finally leaping Ultra HD. On Wednesday, the boutique Blu-ray publisher announced that it would start releasing 4K UHD Blu-rays, but only for certain films in the collection.
Criterion’s UHD film series will begin with a stellar lineup featuring Orson Well’s iconic Citizen Kane. Criterion is releasing a new Citizen Kane edition for the first time since 1992’s 50th Anniversary. However, the original version was available on Laserdisc.
Criterion’s 4K debut offerings will also include David Lynch’s haunting, dreamlike Mulholland Dr. and Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes. Jane Campion’s The Piano and Albert Hughes’ Menace II Society will also be included.
Every UHD release will include both the 4K version and a standard Bluray. This will include both the film as well as the special features. Criterion claims that some of these films will include Dolby Vision HDR or Dolby Atmos support.
Criterion will reveal which release is first and its new features in its November 2021 announcement next Wednesday.
