Steve Rogers is Captain America; why couldn’t Peggy be Captain Britain?
Marvel’s What If …? __S.1__ Captain Carter is imbued in the super-soldier serum and is every inch the superhero Steve Rogers was informal MCU timeline.
But wait, Steve’s superhero name wasn’t Captain America but Captain Rogers. Why shouldn’t Peggy be called Captain Britain as her superhero name? There has been a Captain Britain since 1976 in Marvel comics.
Captain America has a very different history from Captain Britain in Marvel comics. “Captain Britain”, a title of magical origin passed between Braddock family members and given by Merlyn, a legend in pop culture lore. The Captains Britain were given the fairytale-esque option of the Amulet of Rights or the Sword of Might. The Braddock family often rejects those who chose the sword for their tendency towards violence. This is a far cry from a super-soldier with serum enhancements in World War II.
The X-Men are responsible for Captain Britain’s longevity, whether Brian Braddock or his twin sister Betsy. Although Captain Britain was not created to be a mutant character by X-Men writers, they wanted to make an X-Men spinoff book in England. They chose the Captain because of their love for the character.
This raises the question: Does Peggy “Captain Carter” because Marvel Studios isn’t willing to hint at the possibility that X-Men might be introduced before they are properly introduced?
We could sit down with A.C. Bradley (HTMOF creator) and ask them why Captain Carter. Why not Captain Britain? Bradley seemed to anticipate the question.
