McCree, Overwatch’s new leader, is to be renamed next week
Blizzard has hurriedly removed all references to the developers named After Overwatch’s McCree after the allegations were made.
From next week, the character will be called Cole Cassidy. This will be made available through a patch for the game. The company will also remove any voice lines that reference “Jesse McCree” before they are recorded.
Blizzard is Overwatch’s developer. Activision has been collecting information about him since 2018. The lawsuit alleges harassment at not only work but also general toxicity within the studios owned by Activision. This led to several members of the company leaving, including Jessie McCree.
Blizzard will also remove any references to developers in their other titles, including the forthcoming Diablo 4. This is part of their new policy that no character will be named after a developer, as they don’t know who or what will emerge from the woodwork next.
This is just the latest bad news from Activision Blizzard, which follows the 2019 Hong Kong situation where they banned a player in a tournament because they mentioned Free Hong Kong. (Activision has a large investment in China and has been accused of hiring union-busting companies.
In a bizarre twist of events, investigators now disagree on how to handle Activision’s general investigation. Stephen Totillo, Axios’ Stephen Totillo, reported that the state’s Department opposed the decision by congress’s investigators to settle the sexual harassment case. It is not clear how that will play out. Still, Activision continues to work as if nothing is going on, with Diablo 2 Resurrectedlaunched and the upcoming Call of Dutyattracting some attention from the public.
