Several developers at Microsoft are believed to be discussing the possibility of Call Of Duty being removed from its annual release schedule following the historic acquisition by Activision Blizzard.

You’re probably aware that Activision has always released at least one new Call Of Duty game each year since the beginning of most franchises’ existence. Treyarch, Infinity Ward, and Sledgehammer Games share a three-year development cycle. Studios like Beenox and Raven Software lend their support to all titles. Toys For Bob also supports the project.

This gruelling schedule means that most studios under Activision Blizzard spend all their Time playing Call Of Duty. You might be wondering why Crash Bandicoot 4: it’s About Time’s creators didn’t get the chance to make Spyro 4. It’s because they were drafted to make Call Of Duty: Warzone… more… shooter.

There is hope. Numerous Call of Duty developers now believes that the series will ditch its messy annual release schedule, which has been a problem for many years.

Bloomberg reports a few “high-level employees at Activision” are looking into significant changes to Call of Duty’s status as an annual franchise. This is necessary to help Call of Duty recover from a few disappointments. Call Of Duty: Vanguard’s sales were the worst in more than a decade. Modern Warfare, Warzone and Warzone are in a terrible state.

The future of Call Of Duty remains uncertain, with the Microsoft/Activision purchase out still to be completed. We know that Xbox boss Phil Spencer wants the series to continue on PlayStation and that he is excited to revive some classic Activision franchises.

I think that Call Of Duty should be available once per year. What is the cost to get a new Spyro or Crash Bandicoot game? It’s a price I’m willing to pay.
