The Popular Red Dead Redemption 2 Dutch Theory Is A Insult To The Game
Red Dead Redemption 2 has a beautiful video game with excellent performances. However, I think few stories Rockstar’sepic Western tells are as sad as Dutch van der Linde’s gradual fall.
You will already know that Dutch and his band of outlaws are not happy if you played the original Red Dead Redemption before going to the 2018 prequel.
Even if Dutch were a stranger to you, Red Dead Redemption2‘s opening paints a bleak picture. They are on the brink of their death, chased by a snowstorm. The gang is being pursued by the snowstorm, desperate and on the verge of extinction.
Dutch is technically the wrong man, just like the rest of the gang. He’s murdered. He’s robbed. He also follows a code and takes care of his family. We see Dutch slowly deteriorate from a reliable leader to a paranoid mess. The terrifying and murderous Micah easily controls him. He’s made a big mess of everyone and has ruined the gang by trusting the wrong people.
Another popular theory is that Dutch’s personality change is caused by a head injury he sustained during the Urban Pleasures mission. Another job goes wrong early in the game. The gang’s fearless leader is battered and left dazed for the remainder of the task.
According to the theory, Dutch suffered a brain injury from the blow, which eventually led to his downslope. Although it is an intriguing idea, I feel it is an insult to the excellent writing in Red Dead Redemption II.
Red Dead Redemption2‘s Dutch story is remarkable in that the fall from grace of his character is not a sudden one. It’s gradual. Earned. Multiple characters refer to the Blackwater job from the beginning. This heavily implies that Micah forced Dutch into murdering a cold-blooded woman. The very presence of Micah has been a source of contention for the group. John and Arthur expressed concern that he led the Dutch down a dangerous path.
Many other factors push Dutch to the brink of his breaking point and beyond. A man was trying to find his place in a world that didn’t want him. He is a man trying to keep his family together, while being chased all across America. He also has to contend with constant setbacks and betrayals.
Sorry, but it’s all just a bump on my head. Red Dead Redemption II is better than that. So much better.
