Sony Patents a New PlayStation 5 Graphics Technology, Looking to “Optimise” the Console
It’s early 2022, and many people can’t find a PlayStation 5, nearly a year after the new flagship console was launched by Sony. The average person has had to overcome considerable obstacles to obtain a PS5.
Sony appears unaffected by this fact and has now filed a patent to create a “System And Method for Accelerating Ray Tracing.” This makes games look better, so Sony is looking to increase the graphical output of their console through this new method.
This patent was discovered by Twitter user Onion00048 and included a diagram showing the system. The patent reads: “Sony Interactive Entertainment filed a new patent which suggests that the format holder wants to optimize its ray-tracing effects on #PS5.”
It’s interesting to note that the patent was filed by Mark Cerny (the lead systems architect for PlayStation 5), so it’s legitimate. I’m not sure you can understand the diagram, but it’s possible.
Be careful not to get too excited about the new PlayStation 5 graphical update or a new console, the PlayStation 5 Pro. Companies patent this stuff all the time because they want to and not because they intend to. Let’s wait to see what happens, as is often the case. I guess that Sony’s primary concern right now, before worrying about any other issues, is getting the consoles into the hands of those who need them.
