Unreal Engine 5 Remakes Possible for the Original “Tomb Raider”
A few days ago, Epic revealed that a new Tomb Raider title was in development. Crystal Dynamics used the Unreal Engine. Crystal Dynamics is the creator of many of Lara Croft’s PlayStation 2 era outings, as well as the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider.
It was interesting to note that the studio wasn’t behind Lara’s latest outing, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, with control instead of being handed over to Canada’s Eidos Montreal. While I remain the only member of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider fan club, the fact that Crystal Dynamics has been given control is likely to be a big win for most fans. We don’t know what the new Tomb Raider title might look like.
Lara Croft’s origin story was the reboot trilogy. The next games will see her return to full form. But, it is possible that she could be more familiar than expected. As suggested by Reddit user Stock_Presentation_9, it seems that Crystal Dynamics could be working on an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original Tomb Raider, released in 1996 and following Lara’s attempts to find the Scion of Atlantis.
Stock_Presentation_9 notes that just hours after the announcement, the official Tomb Raider Twitter account updated its cover photo. They also unveiled a new logo for the game. It is very similar to the logo from 1996’s Tomb Raider. Tomb Raider was 25 years old last year. This seems unlikely in this age of remakes. Maybe one day, we will be able to lock the butler back in the freezer. Good times.
