Gilbert Gottfried, the beloved comedian and actor, has passed away. He was best known for his role as Iago in Aladdin movies. He was 67.

Gottfried’s publicist confirmed that Gottfried died last night from myotonic dystrophy type 2. This is a form of muscular dystrophy.

After a long battle with cancer, we are sad to announce the death of Gilbert Gottfried. Gilbert was not only the most famous comedian, but he was also a great father, brother, friend, and father to his children. Today is a sad day, but please continue to laugh as loudly as possible in Gilbert’s honour,” his family posted in a Twitter tribute.

Gottfried’s distinctive voice and witty sense of humour helped him bring many beloved animated characters to life. Most people will remember him as Iago, the parrot, in the Disney Aladdin movies. (And the first two Kingdom Hearts games). He also voiced Digit, the robotic bird, in Cyberchase. He has roles in shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Fairly Odd Parents and Superman: The Animated Series.

Following the tragic news about Gottfried’s passing, friends and colleagues have begun to send their condolences.
