Sonic Origins Confuses Hydrocity vs. Hydro City Debate
Since 1994, the Sonic the Hedgehog community has been plagued by the question “How do you pronounce Hydrocity?” Hydrocity refers to a level of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. There have been online arguments about the spelling of the name of this zone. Sega addressed the issue on social media, and the comics had Tails and Sonic participate in the exact same argument. Sonic Origins contains multiple classic Sonic games. This includes the third. Hydrocity is now available. It appears as a level when you start the stage. Sonic Origins now has a menu to listen to the music. It lists Hydrocity instead of the standard one-word format. This is to me, deeply amusing.
Although the contradictions in the collection don’t make it possible to definitively state the pronunciation, it is possible that Sega staff mistyped the name or didn’t realize how much baggage Hydrocity has had for almost 30 years.
They then typed what they believed it should be in the English translation. Sega’s localization staff may be able to tell what it is doing, or, if you prefer conspiracy theory, the exact spelling of the name could be mistyped. Sonic Origins, whatever the case may be, at least it gives people involved in the Hydro City/Hydrocity debate something to shout about. Sega should update the collection to make it more consistent. I hope that they do not. I love chaos and controlling chaos.

Sonic Origins is looking back on the blue blur’s history, but Sonic Frontiers, the next mainline title in the series, is taking on an open-world format. It has mixed results and there are negative comparisons with Sonic fan games. This is something that fan creators don’t love.
