Returnal was developed by Studio Housemarque – creators of UPA Resogun, an immensely successful shoot’em game that earned universal praise – to provide players with an action game with a TPP viewpoint where you must discover hidden corners on an unknown planet while combatting enemies that threaten it! A hybrid TPS/roguelike title.
In the game we take control of Selene, an astronaut forced to repeat an event over and over: her ship colliding with an unfamiliar planet and her subsequent crash landing there. Each death returns Selene back to this painful cycle while new lives seeming from nowhere change her world significantly, forcing Selene into yet more madness with every death she experiences. Her only chance at escape lies within unravelling all its hidden mysteries before succumbing to death once more – something death only amplifies as she spirals further and further towards madness.
Exploration is key to any game. Our ever-shifting world provides us with new locations and objects every time, adding another element of surprise every time we explore! Additionally, ancient technology we discover helps strengthen Selene’s abilities for subsequent approaches to the game more smoothly.
