Mass Effect fans largely agree that Commander Shepard shouldn’t appear again in ME5.

At The Game Awards 2020, BioWare revealed their beloved sci-fi RPG series Mass Effect 5 through an eye-catching teaser trailer which quickly garnered fans. Unfortunately since that announcement though we’ve received only scattered information and reports that its development had begun early 2022 – aside from some brief glimpses.

Details regarding its story remain rather vague, although Dr. Liara T’Soni has confirmed her return. As we now reach three years since it was announced, fans are anxiously waiting to witness some gameplay as well as learn of any future updates on what the plot may hold as well as when and where this new game may take place.

But before proceeding further, please know that I will delve into spoiler territory. However, these spoilers pertain only to Mass Effect 3, released in 2012 so if you’re reading this as a Mass Effect fan hopefully all these years later and want an up-to-date story arc? In Mass Effect 3 the majority of endings show Commander Shepard dying; there may have been one that suggests otherwise; let me describe one such possibility here as an example if necessary! Upon reaching its epic conclusion most endings feature him or she having died; however there may have been one option which suggests they survived and this one of them could even survives to battle conclusion in Mass Effect 3 before.

Since that event occurred, fans of Mass Effect 5 have speculated over Commander Shepard’s survival, according to reports by GGRecon and ResetEra respectively. Furthermore, fans discussed on ResetEra whether Commander Shepard should return in Mass Effect 5.

“Commissioner Shepard. After playing through the Remastered Trilogy and realizing he/she may still be alive based off the trailers, playing ResetEra user LastNac’s series makes me long for Shepard.” Is such an intriguing character return appealing?

“I truly hope not,” replied RoboPlato. The series needs to move beyond Shepard. I want to create an experience around a new hero whom you care as much about as any member from The Normandy’s crew, according to him. However, Steve Carrell (I mean Julia Crawford) disproved of that claim with “No! No!! No!!!”.

Most thread members don’t seem keen on Shepard returning unless his Commander is introduced with dignity, with AvianAviator commenting “I don’t care whether or not they do, as long as it’s written well; all I want to see is going back into that world!”

“They will return, as demonstrated by the teaser trailer. As for me personally, however, my expectations regarding Mass Effect XV remain neutral as well,” noted SofNascimento.

At present, Mass Effect 5 does not yet have an official release date or information to come this year; fans will undoubtedly hope for updates regarding a launch for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
