Fans agree: Spore was an epic masterpiece that warrants its own sequel.
Revisiting games of old is nothing new; be it via sequel, remaster, or remake; however it seems to be becoming an increasing trend as we yearn for nostalgia. Recently alone we’ve witnessed remakes for Dead Space and Resident Evil 4; revival of Silent Hill franchise; long awaited Alan Wake sequel officially revealed and more!
Gaming fans are making themselves heard when it comes to what they would like next in terms of old favourites – Capcom fans clamour for a Code Veronica remake while some call out for The Simpsons: Hit & Run revival and Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater remake at PlayStation Showcase last month were some notable announcements, while Reddit users are suggesting an even stranger sequel: Spore!
Spore was released as a real-time strategy game on PC way back in 2008. Created by Maxis and published by EA, players had to develop species before overseeing its ongoing evolution. One great aspect of Spore, like Maxis’ earlier hit The Sims, is that its playback can continue for as long as desired; though I found its depth lacking for my tastes.
Reddit user IArePant proposed Spore as the next nostalgic favorite that should receive a modern sequel, writing: “Spore was unarguably brilliant and should get its own sequel – seriously! With all its customisation options and procedurally generated environments – and its almost magical ability of running without issues… it deserves one.”
“I wish we could see another game with such creativity and scope using modern technologies – an attempt like Spore could become one of the greatest videogames ever, yet no one seems interested in trying.” Many others concurred.
PrimordialOtter commented, “Spore was ahead of its time; can you imagine having seen that same game come out today on UE4/5 graphics.” Meanwhile solen1k agreed and wrote back saying they agree “Spore is an outstanding game that fell short of expectations; with modern hardware and the right people behind its creation it could become unbelievably good!
