Fan of Gwen Stacy are convinced she identifies as trans in Across The Spider-Verse
Spider-Man fans believe Gwen Stacy to be transgender in Across the Spider-Verse.
Now playing in cinemas is the highly-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse and receiving wide critical acclaim – 96% among critics and 95% from audiences according to Rotten Tomatoes; 886 on Metacritic respectively (based on both audiences and critics scoring it).
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse picks up where its predecessor left off with Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Woman (Hailee Steinfeld), joining forces to take down an imminent new threat against everyone across all dimensions and dimensions.
Be warned of spoilers for the 2018 movie (so, consider this a spoiler warning), rather than Peter Parker mourning Uncle Ben’s passing away, Gwen Stacy must deal with Peter Parker being killed by Lizard instead.
Gwen was wrongfully charged with his murder, prompting police to pursue her across New York in search of her. Under suspicion, she must now conceal her identity from both criminals as well as New Yorkers who see her as their enemy.
As reported by ThePinkNews.com, some fans speculated Gwen may be trans based on her portrayal in Across the Spider-Verse as feeling trapped from being herself and visual clues from scenes featuring her character.
Starting off, several scenes featuring Gwen in Earth-65 seem to use pastel blue, pink and white filters – the colours of trans pride flag. According to ThePinkNews this colour palette was used during an exchange when Gwen confronted her father (an off-duty police officer) about having to hide her identity from him.
Gwen can see her father wearing a trans-Pride Flag bag on his police uniform; and in her bedroom there is even a “Protect Trans Kids” poster displayed for protection.
Although Gwen may or may not identify as transgender, her appearance here demonstrates her support of transgender people regardless of any official confirmation from either side. Either way, seeing that representation was appreciated.
As stated in our review of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, this film requires multiple viewings to fully appreciate and appreciate every frame and detail created for its creation. So for now? Go out and view it on as large a screen possible before returning back into cinema to watch again.”
Tom Holland of Marvel Cinematic Universe fame recently said he plans on continuing as Peter Parker/Spider-Man for as long as possible, which makes us very pleased!
