Santa Monica studio behind God of War reportedly working on new sci-fi game
Yesterday’s Xbox Games Showcase gave us an ample glimpse into Xbox users’ futures – and let me just say, it looks bright indeed. After experiencing some rough months, Xbox dazzled viewers with what may just have been their season’s showcase of first-party franchise updates like Avowed to Fable.
“PlayStation Showcase was not exactly impressive: its focus was almost solely on third-party titles; Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 gameplay and release date announcement were the only first-party announcements at all – followed by its announcement at Summer Game Fest a month later. Rumors indicate Sucker Punch may almost finished working on Ghost of Tsushima 2, although no official word on release has been announced as of yet; Naughty Dog have also hinted they are working on some kind of single player project after cancelling their TLOU multiplayer title while Santa Monica Studio remain shrouded until that changes further announcement comes out a month from now : it could just make its grand return!
One developer may have let slip that Santa Monica Studio are working on an intriguing sci-fi title, according to ComicBook. Alanah Pearce from Santa Monica wrote studio recently made an appearance on Play, Watch, Listen podcast where Mike Bithell mentioned working on “unspecified sci-fi franchise”, whereupon Pearce laughed out loud before replying with her own thought in response stating they too worked in this genre – potentially providing further confirmation about Santa Monica’s next IP.
Of course, this information isn’t much, but it is promising if you have been hoping for another genre from the studio. But don’t fret too much God of War fans; multiple teams seem to be working at the studio; we know Cory Balrog has reduced his involvement with God of War Ragnarok so as to focus on other projects; suggesting one team may work on God of War while the other works on sci-fi IP development.
So if you were hoping for more from Kratos and Atreus’ storylines in Ragnarok, or Atreus spin-off films in general, they still could happen; we just have to wait and see.
