Star Wars Outlaws truly left me speechless this summer’s not-E3 event. Who would have predicted that Ubisoft’s open world Star Wars game could actually turn out to be GTA-esque space faring game?!?

Outlaws features a wanted system inspired by Rockstar Games’ iconic action-adventure series, and although we only saw brief glimpses, it seems likely to add an exciting element that other Star Wars games lack: travel as an outlaw across the galaxy! Jedi may be great and all, but travelling as an scoundrel offers much greater excitement!

Outlaws features another brilliant addition that promises to enhance space travel – seamless surface takeoffs. As GamesRadar+ reported yesterday during their gameplay preview of Outlaws, protagonist Kay Vess ran away from Imperial officers after an unsuccessful meeting, boarded her ship, and fleed back home – leaving behind its enemies behind them!

Once Kay boards her ship, we witness an impressive short cinematic of her firing up her vessel before we see its user interface (UI) return, signalling player control once more. Once underway, players will have the unique experience of flying it straight from Earth’s surface through atmosphere to space without ever needing transitional scenes; that alone makes this game unforgettable!

Julian Gerighty, Outlaws’ Creative Director, noted how “having this seamless experience of going from walking, to speeder, to spaceship and out of atmosphere into space was something the development team held very close.” Mathias Karlson echoed these sentiments by noting “When thinking about this game […], our goal was to offer that full, seamless experience – sitting in cantina in city on planet’s surface, jumping onto your own speeder driving towards own ship […] smoothly flying off into space”.

Star Wars Outlaws will officially begin production and be made available for release sometime between 2024-2025.
