Todd Howard of Bethesda Games believes The Elder Scrolls VI could be his last title due to long development times.

Starfield from Bethesda Studios will soon hit Xbox Series X/S consoles and PC, promising to be their largest title yet. Not only will the open world feature over 1,000 planets but there will also be sprawling wastelands, towering cities such as New Atlantis, NPCs that know your name (including an annoying fan named Adoring Fan from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion!) plus NPCs calling you by name like Adoring Fan from Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion!

However, Starfield director Todd Howard is already looking ahead to The Elder Scrolls VI which is scheduled for release sometime after Starfield. Speaking at Sunday’s showcase of Starfield he discussed The Elder Scrolls VI in detail saying it may be his last sequel due to how long Bethesda takes creating its open world adventures.

Todd Howard spoke candidly when discussing post-launch support options for Starfield and Elder Scrolls VI, noting: “Unlike in previous times where games would come out and then soon after be replaced by sequels or updates, now we can support that game for much longer, as is our plan. And with Elder Scrolls 6, that may very well be my final Elder Scrolls game… though I hesitate to say so as it might offend some. Who knows?”

Given how long it has been since The Elder Scrolls VI was first announced back in 2018, we know very little about its development process or when we might see its release date. Howard noted Fallout 5 would likely follow The Elder Scrolls VI at some point and stated, “Fallout 5 will certainly follow Elder Scrolls 6 at some point… At some point in the future”.

Todd Howard will certainly leave Bethesda in style if The Elder Scrolls VI proves to be his final game for Bethesda; one of its highly-anticipated sequels follows on the success of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim which remains widely played today by fans around the globe.

Bethesda recently made headlines when they revealed Starfield will be locked at 30fps for Xbox Series X/S users – an announcement which caused consternation among many fans of the franchise.
