Xbox One will no longer exist – we bid you farewell dear old friend!
At some point in every console’s lifetime, support – in terms of system updates and games being released for it – will end. All good things must come to an end eventually and we must eventually accept that those devices we spent so many hours enjoying just are becoming outdated.
Unfortunately, Microsoft may have decided that now is the time for them to discontinue production of Xbox One console. Next November marks 10 years of Xbox One usage; with two new-gen consoles already established and growing in popularity from within its ranks – Microsoft may well decide it’s time for something different.
Matt Booty, head of Microsoft Studios, confirmed to Axios in an interview that they have officially moved onto generation Nine with Xbox. In their case this refers solely to Series X and S consoles while Xbox Ones count as part of generation Eight.
Booty revealed that no internal teams are currently developing for older-gen Xbox consoles other than supporting Minecraft, however the company plans on maintaining some level of support through cloud streaming that makes ninth generation titles playable on previous-generation systems – which is still better than nothing!
Last year, it was disclosed in an investor presentation by Sony that its PS4 game releases would cease by 2025; therefore Microsoft made this move much earlier than its rival. On the one hand, PS5s have long been difficult to get hold of while Xbox Series S consoles have been readily available since launch; thus Sony may well understandably hesitate, since many customers may otherwise not have had access to its new releases if not for PlayStation.
Even after its disappointing reveal, Xbox One saw some amazing releases during its lifespan; thus making this move from Microsoft an unpleasant but inevitable parting gift to us all. Let us only hope that with their renewed focus on next-gen titles they bring even greater things!
