PlayStation Plus just introduced an impressive free feature for certain subscribers.
PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers will soon have a new feature to take advantage of: PS5 game cloud streaming.
According to reports, this new feature is still in “testing”, with few details and an unknown release date as of yet.
PlayStation has unveiled plans to offer certain PS5 titles from its Extra Tier Game Catalogue as well as Game Trials via cloud streaming, eliminating the need to download new titles onto hard drives. Of course, this won’t suit every person as its success depends on a stable internet connection; but if your provider offers fast internet speed it could be worthwhile exploring.
Not to be confused with the current game streaming service available exclusively to Premium subscribers – including titles from PS1, PS2 PS3 PS4 as well as some PS Vita titles – the PlayStation 5 game streaming will only be accessible by those on Premium; any Essential or Extra subscribers would require upgrading before accessing it.
Nick Maquire of Sony recently discussed this service and stated it as essential: “Our aim for Premium members is for them to access as many games via cloud streaming as possible.”
As more PS5 titles begin launching, we look forward to adding cloud streaming capability for PS5 titles alongside existing PS3, PS4 and classic titles that Premium members are already able to stream… We are in early development stages right now; more details, including an anticipated launch timeframe will be revealed when ready.”
Playstation’s decision to offer cloud streaming capabilities could have been inspired by Xbox’s Game Pass Ultimate subscription service which first entered beta testing before going on sale officially in 2021, offering streaming on both console and PC gaming devices.
Cloud streaming makes perfect sense following Sony’s unveiling of Project Q at last month’s PlayStation Showcase event, an ingenious portable console similar to Wii U controller or Nintendo Switch that will stream games from PS5 console if both share an internet connection.
Project Q was severely criticised by fans, as only rooms within your own home are suitable to utilize it for use.
Recently, PlayStation revealed their June PlayStation Plus games lineup and fans have declared it to be “an absolutely fantastic month”.
