Now We Know Who the Witness Is in Destiny 2
Season of the Deep Week 5 brings one of Destiny 2’s key cutscenes: Witness cutscene. Destiny 2 has come a long way since being about Light versus Darkness alone – now featuring Pyramid Ships, Witness, and Veil characters that spark speculation; in this week 5 episode’s Witness cutscene we finally receive some answers about them all!
Ahsa, an ancient Titan creature, employs Sloane to share her knowledge of Witness’ plans in the Into the Depths questline. However, this week’s cutscene provides players with more insights into her background; including discussing Traveler and Veil connections which set the scene for “the final shape”, an expansion’s title. Furthermore, fans familiar with Unveiling lore will recognize names which had long eluded Destiny players – which will bring even further revelation.
The cutscene depicts how an earlier civilization within the universe discovered and were blessed by discovering a Traveler, creating their Golden Age — much like that seen here on Earth and Riis for Eliksni home planet Elis. After living under its silence and prosperity for millenia, they slowly endured its chaos before seeking something else; believing this Gardener needed something called Winnower or Veil (Winnowing machine).
Ahsa notes that their intent was to use the Veil and Traveler connection to unlock and manipulate Darkness power for personal gain – specifically to manipulate reality by altering reality itself and create portals like in Destiny 2 Lightfall campaign finale. Ahsa reveals their plan was similar in concept: using them both together could reshape reality into its final shape and threaten existence itself. Ahsa claims they planned this in advance using connection between Veil and Traveler that threaten existence itself as their goal was similar but different (Ahsa explained they used link between Veil and Traveler) connection in order to use Lightfall campaign’s finale that saw portal creation). Ahsa describes this plan similar to Destiny 2 Lightfall campaign ending with creation of portal.)
However, they were unsuccessful; Traveler fled, which led to the creation of Witness. People came together into one entity – while simultaneously becoming victims – while Ahsa revealed to Ahsa its existential purpose – seeking salvation and finding meaning in this universe – thus beginning an endless cat-and-mouse game between Traveler and Witness.
Season of the Deep hasn’t ended just yet, leaving us still clueless as to Ahsa and Sloane’s condition.
