Diablo IV has become an absolute smash hit, yet an update to its live service content is being met with overwhelming opposition by fans.

While Diablo IV officially released on 6 June, its first season of post-launch content won’t start rolling out until mid to late July. Seasonal content is nothing new to Diablo, though since this game features its inaugural battle pass mode it could work differently this time.

As reported by IGN, however, this won’t be the case: instead it has been confirmed that in true Diablo style players will need to create new seasonal characters when seasonal content launches; they won’t be able to use their current one that they have levelled since launch for gameplay purposes.

“To participate in Diablo’s seasonal questline, mechanics, season journey and battle pass you will need a seasonal character created,” Diablo general manager Rod Fergusson confirmed via Twitter. Playing campaign with that seasonal character (if desired or necessary) will advance their season journey and battle pass progress as well as advance any possible season journey milestones or battle passes that might apply.”

Don’t fret though; your current character won’t be deleted; they will instead be moved into the Eternal Realm so you can play without seasonal content, just as will happen with seasonal characters when season one concludes.

Fergusson said you can continue playing in the Eternal Realm without participating in seasonal activities if they’re not your cup of tea, while once each season ends your seasonal character will move over into it in case you want to keep playing it there if desired.

Diablo IV’s fast selling status makes its seasonal reset an unwelcome change for some players; therefore, many may find this announcement surprising and it will be exciting to observe concurrent player counts change when Season One kicks off.
