Sony fans have long wondered whether we would see an updated PlayStation 5 console before the debut of PlayStation 6. Now Microsoft may have provided their answer after leaking what appears to be a slimmed-down model of what could become known as PlayStation 5 Slim.

Insiders have long speculated on Sony unveiling a revamped PS5, featuring detachable disc drives. If Sony followed through on this rumor and introduced one base console rather than two (disc tray and digital versions), manufacturing costs would decrease substantially and production could streamline considerably compared to now – though little evidence supports it despite its prevalence. We do know for certain Project Q will arrive as a PlayStation handheld that acts like both Nintendo Switch and DualSense controller when remote playing can be set up between PS5’s remote play capabilities linked back with your PS5 for remote play capabilities – although leaks from Microsoft have suggested they plan release of PS5 Slim as well.

Microsoft have recently been in court following US’ Federal Trade Commission filing of a temporary restraining order and injunction in an attempt to block their proposed acquisition of Activision for $68.7 billion. We’ve heard testimony from Microsoft, Bethesda and even PlayStation in court; one document submitted as evidence states Sony plans on releasing PlayStation 5 Slim with same reduced price point of Digital Edition at “$399.99.99.” According to reports by The Verge.

If you were hoping that the PS5 Slim would be significantly less costly than its regular base console counterpart, unfortunately that does not appear to be the case. While $399.99 may seem cheaper than its traditional equivalent, considering we already have Digital Edition available for that same amount (at $399.99), any slim model likely needs additional bells and whistles in order to draw buyers in.

Could Sony’s PS5 Slim be the detachable disc drive version rumor mill has been hinting about? Would its $399.99 price point include it? Otherwise, this adds even further expense and complexity for owners of older consoles – though we will keep an eye out on any further updates or developments regarding this development. It remains an intriguing theory and we shall certainly keep our eyes peeled for any developments on that front!
