Not sure about you, but when I think of PlayStation Plus my mind immediately drifts to its vast selection of free games.

Did you know there are currently 453 games available to extra and premium tier PlayStation Plus subscribers to select from? As part of their latest essential tier drop, all PlayStation Plus subscribers can purchase Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Alan Wake Remastered and Endling – Extinction is Forever for free this month. I often forget that PlayStation Plus subscriptions provide access to online play; when so many modern games require online connectivity these days – be it multiplayer or otherwise – such features seem strangely hidden behind paywalls rather than being part of our consoles like Diablo IV players feel.

Reddit user Buzstringer posted an image with the words, “This is great! More please.” The picture featured an in-game warning stating, “Without PlayStation Plus, you will still be able to enjoy playing this game, but won’t have access to certain multiplayer activities such as Clans, PvP battles, chat rooms or trading with other players”. Not exactly something anyone wants to read when diving into an expensive new title!

“What happens then if I go into Fields of Hatred without PS Plus? Am I alone on the map?” To which, Elkeiem answered in the affirmative; you are alone on the map without PS Plus.” NullSpaceGaming noted, sadly enough, “We did not fight against always online hard enough”. Guilty_Impression_44 noted, however, it all changed when Sony wanted their piece of what Microsoft was gaining with their paid subscription model for online games (PS3 used to be completely free; PC was completely free as well; hence why I stuck to PC for playing online gaming”.

Pricey online play doesn’t just apply to PlayStation; Xbox Game Pass and Nintendo Switch Online can also add up quickly when played across all three consoles simultaneously. Yet with so few choices now, is online gaming really such a viable alternative option?
