Payday 3’s continued online confirmation has left fans disappointed and perplexed.

As it has recently come to light that gamers must always maintain an internet connection in order to play Payday 3, even when playing solo, fans have expressed displeasure with this news.

Given we are nearly 10 years removed from Payday 2, fans are understandably excited for its threequel. Overkill Software and Starbreeze Studios collaborated in creating this co-op FPS, and announced its official release date during June’s Xbox Games Showcase – 21 September will mark its arrival to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S consoles as part of this month’s impressive line up of titles.

Unfortunately, fans were disappointed to learn during a livestream hosted by Starbreeze Studio’s global brand director Almir Listo that Payday 3 will not support an offline mode where gamers could play solo. When asked by one viewer if there would be such an option available to them he replied by saying no and advised players who wanted one must connect online first as it’s built using Unreal Engine with cross-progression/cross-play used throughout. For an enjoyable gameplay experience he suggested they must always remain online “My dude!”

As reported by PC Gamer, Reddit fans have taken to expressing their displeasure with the situation. Some say they now regret preordering, with many labelling its lack of offline play as “dealbreaker”.

Flexibleheart41 noted, “My location, along with poor wifi service, makes gaming unplayable for me at this time,” which made the dealbreaker clear to them. According to aretzuu “This genuinely deters me from purchasing video games as an individual player who’s always suffered with poor internet.” Meanwhile Vasxus expressed fear for what gaming will look like 10 years from now if more lag-prone titles became unplayable for that same reason.

Given that the game hasn’t even released, this controversy doesn’t bode well. Let’s see how well it performs at release date!
