As each year passes, speculation on which game might win The Game Awards Game of the Year title can only become more regular and interesting conversations are always brought up whenever a particularly worthwhile title releases.

One aspect that makes less sense, however, is when gamers make definitive statements regarding unreleased titles during awards season. Of course we all can predict which titles might do well but how often have we been left completely disappointed? Just consider Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red; while now renowned (it recently earned a “very positive overall rating on Steam), on release its bugs and glitches were unbearable to play and left many feeling let down after being so excited for its arrival.

No doubt by now you see where this is leading: over on Reddit, some Starfield fans have begun questioning its chances at garnering Game of the Year status, given alleged media bias against Zelda games such as Starfield.

“Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t stand a chance against anything, which is unfortunate because I thought TotK wasn’t even all that great compared to its competition; however, its mass appeal and Zelda bias make up for any shortcoming,” one user commented. Another speculated “Starfield could possibly become its successor as people still talk about Breath of the Wild while Tears of the Kingdom has come and gone”.

Others, however, have pointed out that these discussions should probably wait until Starfield has actually been released and in our hands: one user noted: “Starfield hasn’t even been released yet; we know nothing of how this game will present itself; my personal opinion is it will be great; yet we should probably temper expectations until after its actual launch as this would give a false sense of certainty about any potential GOTY contender status for Starfield… just my two cents…”

Starfield will officially debut on 6 September with early access beginning on 1 September.
