Gears Of War players agree that Dom’s demise is the’saddest’ in gaming history.
The first impression you might have after watching a Gears of War video is not emotional storytelling.
The original Gears of War for the Xbox 360 was released in 2006, and along with Halo it became one of Microsoft’s flagship properties. Gears of War inspired many third-person shooters. But Epic Games were able to capture that magic.
Gears of War takes place on an Earth like planet called Sera, which was governed in short by the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG). Sera was forever changed after “Emergence Day” when an alien species known as the Locust appeared to wipe out our race.
Gears of War was a franchise that spawned many sequels and spin-offs. The core story of Gears revolved around the relationship between Dominic Santiago and Marcus Fenix. In 2011, Gears of War 3 brought a tragic end to this beloved bromance.
The title of this article is a spoiler. But to be fair, Gears of War 3 has been around for 12 years. To avoid spoilers, I will try to limit the story to only what is obvious. It’s true that Dom died in one of the saddest and most heartbreaking video games in history. I wept, and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.
Gary Jules’ “Mad World”, an instrumental, was used to intensify the emotion surrounding Dom’s passing. The song was used again in the Gears of War original trailer. The level of emotional impact was something that no Gears of War fan could have anticipated at the time, and it’s still affecting for many today.
GearsOfJacoby opened the Reddit discussion by saying “Dom’s death is the most saddening death in my gaming history.”
Spartan17492 replied, “As I hear Mad World’s piano I feel sad. Marcus is also trying to stop Marcus.” “Hits every time.”
Wheel_of_Cheese92 said, “I believe that the cinematic experience of video games reached its peak when Dom died.” Everything that followed was a desperate attempt to stir up emotion and make everything epic.
Currently, I am playing the Gears of War 2 game. The story reminded me of how I’m not prepared for the future.
