Ubisoft are throwing everything they have at this franchise to keep Assassin’s Creed fans satisfied and alive with excitement! There’s so much in the pipeline and much to look forward to for fans.

Mark your calendars: the release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage will soon arrive on October 12. Set in ninth century Baghdad and featuring Basim from Valhalla – it marks a return to stealth-based gameplay that many fans requested; in addition, Mirage features one of its smallest maps ever seen before (thank goodness!) Meanwhile we still await Codename Jade which may or may not have entered playtesting and Ezio Auditore who returns in VR’s Assassin’s Creed Nexus before eventually meeting up with us all, plus we wait eagerly on what remains mysterious Codename Red game announcement date?

Ubisoft unveiled Codename Red at their 2022 Ubisoft Forward conference; unfortunately it wasn’t present but we know developers have been hard at work developing it since last year’s event. Set in Feudal Japan, Codename Red will mark Ubisoft’s final RPG entry before returning fully to stealth games; Ubisoft themselves have described Codename Red as an exciting “powerful shinobi fantasy”.

Tom Henderson recently teased that Codename Red would feature two protagonists – a female samurai and male shinobi. At first it seemed likely that these would be gender flipped roles; now though, Henderson took to Twitter in order to correct himself: it turns out there will actually be two male samurais with female counterparts (one is an African refugee!).

Reddit user KvasirTheOld shared this news after suggesting Yasuke as possible male protagonist for the new samurai game, believing he may have been born in Mozambique and later serving Oda Nobunaga (a form of feudal lord) as his weapon bearer and retainer. Yasuka was known to bear arms during battles. He gained notoriety during WWII for serving on Nobunaga’s side in Mozambique against French forces before returning to Japan where he also gained fame under Nobunaga’s rule as retainer and weapon-bearer during Nobunaga’s rise to power.

Codename Red takes place during this same era and although we won’t play as Yasuke directly in-game, its characters could easily draw inspiration from him. I hope Ubisoft reveals more details soon!
