PlayStation Plus provides gamers with an opportunity to explore titles they might otherwise pass up – for instance, giving a cyberpunk RPG another try through PlayStation Plus is ideal.

No, not Cyberpunk 2077… it’s The Ascent! An action-shooter RPG which takes players through several open areas where they must shoot enemies, find loot and advance to the next.

Reaction to the game was generally mixed, usually scoring around 7/10 in reviews. Notable aspects included its cyberpunk visuals and ultraviolent gameplay, yet critics pointed to performance problems, an uninspired story and not enough variation throughout for maximum player engagement.

Over time, this title made its way onto PlayStation Plus Extra’s ever-evolved catalogue of titles.

Reddit user icy__you posted his opinion of The Ascent recently in a thread, proclaiming it was fantastic: “The Ascent is absolutely awesome! Though some might criticize its execution (e.g. menus are difficult and some features such as taxis/cyberdeck upgrades may not be explained properly), and some elements (taxis/cyberdeck upgrades etc) remain mysterious, this game remains enjoyable nonetheless.”

Many were in agreement, looking beyond criticisms to acknowledge the dedication shown by developers for this project and drawing particular interest towards visuals and storyline.

“One of the finest cyberpunk experiences I have played. This developer needs to make a Blade Runner game as there are lots of excellent building blocks here. Glad they added it to their catalog; initially wasn’t going to purchase due to meager reviews at release”

“Such an amazing game! Played it before on PC at 60fps with my humble GTX 1650 graphics card, now on PS5 looks stunning with Dualsense implementation working smoothly – can’t understand where all this negative sentiment stems from as I haven’t encountered one bug after two playthroughs!”

“My partner and I have been co-oping this game and really enjoying its art – its great fun as well!”

Some didn’t share that opinion however; many felt the game is fantastic but severely limited by bugs or other issues.

“I was so looking forward to this, until day 1 on GamePass got stuck with an unfinished quest that wouldn’t progress and made it unfunny for me despite eventually getting fixed”

“Fantastic environment art; however, everything else left me disappointed. Would love to play a diablo-inspired game using this art.”

“I really appreciate the world-building, graphics and music found within, yet feel that any potential was left on the table”

PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers can now download and enjoy The Ascent at no additional cost; Xbox and PC platforms also support playing this exciting adventure game!
