Resident Evil 2 Remake has officially become the best-selling Resident Evil game!
Capcom has had tremendous success recently releasing hit after hit – none more so than with its iconic survival horror franchise Resident Evil.
Capcom’s Resident Evil remains at the apex of survival horror games, yet Konami’s Silent Hill franchise may hold something to offer here – at least when considering its original trilogy titles.
Error Code 101102 Resident Evil was one of the definitive survival horror games when released for PlayStation in 1996, shaping it as we know it today with its compelling (yet somewhat cheeseball-inducing) story, interesting characters, grotesque monsters, resource management systems and much more.
Resident Evil 2 arrived as the perfect example of what a sequel should look like in 1998, taking all that made its predecessor successful and expanding upon them for maximum effect – many fans regard RE2 as one of their favorite titles in the franchise.
So when the Resident Evil 2 remake came out in 2019, not only was it met with critical and fan acclaim – with scores in excess of 90s on aggregate websites like Metacritic – it provided veteran fans of the series an opportunity to play what many considered an improved version of what they loved while welcoming in new players unfamiliar with franchise. Furthermore, its reception by critics and audiences alike also seemed widespread: its opening score on Metacritic pegged it at 94%!
Well beyond being critically successful for Capcom, Resident Evil 2 remake was also an enormous commercial triumph for them. According to their Corporate Relations site, Resident Evil 2 Remake now stands as their best-selling game across PCs and consoles with over 12.6 Million Unit Sales Worldwide!
Resident Evil 2 remake has now overtaken Resident Evil 7 Biohazard which currently holds 12.4 million sales; Resident Evil 5 and 6 both currently boast 8.8 million, followed by Resident Evil Village (8.3 million sales) and Resident Evil 3 remake (7.5 million). All five titles earned spots among Capcom’s Top 10 best-selling games list.
At this writing, the Resident Evil 2 remake sits third behind Monster Hunter Rise with 13.2 million sales and Monster Hunter: World with 19 million. Neither Resident Evil 4 remake or Street Fighter 6 have yet broken into Capcom’s Top 10 best-selling games; we expect that to change soon though!
Resident Evil 2 remake is now available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox platforms – plus there’s even an internet-enabled Nintendo Switch cloud version!
