Steam servers crash as users rush to download 122GB RPG upon launch day
Yesterday there were reports of Steam outages related to one of the most highly anticipated games ever created: Far Cry 5.
Yesterday saw Baldur’s Gate III come officially out for PC players worldwide, prompting thousands to start downloading its massive file size and embark on their 200+ hour playthrough journeys.
There has been immense excitement surrounding this game; so much so, that its developers offered sick notes for players seeking some time off work so that they could play it.
Its download size has made headlines, as its staggering 122GB makes for a large download timeframe requiring high speed internet. Without one, chances are good you faced a long wait until it finally installed on your system.
Some had to wait longer, as Steam appeared overwhelmed by thousands of downloads resulting in crashes for many players. According to our Down Detector report for yesterday at 4pm-5pm was when Baldur’s Gate III first became available for download – coincidently at that same moment when its download became possible!
Baldur’s Gate III did not permit pre-installs, forcing all gamers to download at once due to its large file size and thus prompting some problems during setup.
Thank goodness, the issue seems to have quickly resolved itself and players were finally able to enjoy one of the most anticipated RPGs of all time.
PC players have enjoyed Baldur’s Gate immensely; console gamers will need a bit more patience before receiving it on console. Sony PS users will finally see its port released sometime during September after experiencing some delays; an Xbox version has also been promised but Larian Studios have indicated no timeline as yet for its arrival.
Refreshers for Xbox gamers who would like to join Xbox Game Pass will soon gain access to both Baldur’s Gate games via Game Pass, with more details here and here.
Baldur’s Gate III can now be downloaded via Steam on PC.
