Starfield confirms you can travel with up to 20 companions at once.
Starfield has revealed there will be 20 companions waiting to meet on our journey as humans expand outward into space.
Bethesda games often employ the companion system, in which new people appear out in the wilderness who need help, and in exchange for your assistance they join your crew as companions. As this has long been the hallmark of RPGs, no one was shocked that companions would join our adventures; what shocked people, however, was just how many companions would follow us around.
Starfield Q&A on Discord recently provided details regarding its housing system. In addition, developers confirmed that “over 20 named characters” can be found all throughout the universe; only four companions hail from The Constellation.
Lead designer Emil Pagliarulo explained: When pre-production started on Starfield, we looked back on previous games to understand just how popular and effective companion characters had been, making this aspect a top priority and directly linked with our main quest.
With such an army following us around and ready to shoulder all our burdens for us, fans are already sharing what qualities they look for in an ideal space-age companion – chief among them any interest in building settlements – but anything beyond these traits would likely not suffice.
“Please, Lord, don’t make there be someone obsessed with helping settlements!” wrote Warribo on Reddit. To add insult to injury, another user responded with: “Settlements? Never heard of such an thing… Another colony needs help! Let me mark it on your starmap”. Suddenly memories of our being ignorant to Shaun when traveling around Fallout 4 came flooding back into mind!
One issue players would like addressed is when voice actors trying to portray multiple different characters use similar voices; once again evoking memories from Fallout games. One user joked “I’m sure all 6 voice actors who work at Bethesda will not voice all six characters!” which brought back flashbacks.
At the heart of it all is one crucial question – for many fans: just how sexy their companions will be (to quote from them directly, we paraphrase). Romance plays an essential role for fans, particularly after witnessing just how much fun Baldur’s Gate 3 players had engaged in speedruns for romance in Baldur’s Gate 3. How attractive these companions will be is ultimately subjective – therefore gamers’ debate will continue once the game releases!
Starfield has officially reached Gold status, and will be available starting September 6 on both Xbox 360 and PC platforms.
