Unfortunately, it happens too frequently: once-celebrity gaming franchises can suddenly fall from grace with just one title in their series being bad enough to destroy everything they had going. On Reddit, gamers are discussing which franchises have suffered this misfortune.

One user initiated this discussion by asking, “Which game franchise reigned supreme but ended in failure?” Their answer? Battlefield 2042! Soon after that, other users joined and listed their choices, too!

FPS genre enthusiasts nominated the Medal of Honor as a highly successful rival of Call of Duty on PlayStation, reaching its pinnacle of popularity during its initial run on that system. Another user suggested Far Cry with comments like, ‘Ubisoft hit upon something great in Far Cry 3, and they have tried their hardest ever since to recreate its magic”. With over 400 votes supporting Halo as being an inevitable FPS franchise – many saying its series had “beautifully captured audiences over multiple installments.”

One reply with over one thousand upvotes states, “There are lots of EA titles…”

One user, u/BigDzD, made some points: “Honestly if we’re discussing AAA gaming here, what franchise hasn’t been affected? Since gaming became an $8B industry and corporate interests started taking over, it has seen an alarming decline.” In response, one of u/runescapr_nerd_99’s comments suggested looking beyond just two franchises, such as Baldur’s Gate, God of War, Spider-Man, or Zelda, to see where things lie.”

Call of Duty has emerged as the undisputed winner, as most gamers nominate it as their number-one answer. However, for some, it has become repetitive over time rather than offering something fresh to play.

Burnout is my go-to series; many other titles have attempted to replicate its success, but none have succeeded.
