Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 had to collide, even after its release three years prior. Just when Starfield fans had settled down after its initial launch, Patch 2.0 for Cyberpunk 2077 launched in anticipation of the DLC Phantom Liberty release date; even fanboys of Starfield admit their CDProjekt Red title is more enjoyable at present.

As soon as I began this comparison, it was clear: Cyberpunk 2077 had an edge. As evidenced in Cyberpunk 2077, even games with rough launches can meet and surpass player expectations over time. Though Starfield may experience difficulties at launch due to specific mechanics or features, there will always be time to improve.

One Starfield player recently took to Reddit to express their thoughts on both games, saying they enjoyed Starfield “despite its shortcomings in some areas” before switching back to Cyberpunk 2077 for some contrast and realizing how “antiqued some of its technology is.”

Reddit users first noted how robotic and unrealistic Bethesda character models are, especially those used for RPG games such as Fallout 4. Their RPG characters feel more like “mannequins,” with awkward dialogue delivery; on the contrary, Cyberpunk “NPCs notice you and seamlessly engage in dialogue while performing other tasks such as eating or smoking.”

Replies reveal more and more disparity between Starfield and CP2077: One reaction read, “Give me ladders from CP2077 please”, commenting about its awkward climbing mechanics, while another said character models in Starfield “are my main gripe; every animation sequence an NPC uses has an unfortunate delay between each action in the line. ”

Common complaints related to Starfield include its lack of land vehicles and city scale. Still, users also lament how much better Bethesda NPCs used to be: In Skyrim… a blacksmith would simply continue working and look in your direction when talking. Is nostalgia programming at fault or lack of resources?
