Max Payne 4 plans have been confirmed by developer.

The developer has confirmed Max Payne’s 4 plansper.

Apogee/3D Realms founder Christopher Hoggard recently provided insight into Remedy Entertainment’s plans for Max Payne 4 before Rockstar Games purchased it.

Remedy founder Scott Miller recently discussed Remedy’s plans for the Max Payne franchise before Rockstar took it in a different direction. Remedy had planned for four games set during different seasons of New York City instead of The Heat of Max Payne 3 being set during summer like it is currently, which would have made for an alternative path forward for this series.

Miller revealed on Twitter that Rockstar’s Max Payne 3 game differed significantly from how Remedy/Apogee planned on taking it, noting how each season (winter, fall, summer, and spring) took place in NYC to reveal a long arc storyline in each.

Max Payne 3 was an unqualified success when released by Rockstar Games in 2012 and still boasts a “very positive” rating on Steam today. Although Rockstar has yet to announce a fourth installment of their Max Payne series, Remedy already had plans that are unlikely ever to become a reality if Rockstar releases another installment like they planned  When asked by Miller from Remedy what his opinion of Rockstar’s attempt was, he replied by releasing his finger from the mouse button as soon as it came out but then said something like this when asked by interviewers:

Since Max Payne was first released in 2001, it has come to define the third-person shooter genre. Max Payne pioneered “bullet time,” an innovative mechanic that lets shooters slow time when shooting; since then, it has become an essential feature in numerous shooters. Unfortunately, we may never know Remedy’s plans for Max Payne, but let us hope Rockstar has it covered.
