Furious PlayStation Plus subscribers must pay upgrade costs instead.
Fans are furious after 2K Games announced WWE 2K22 will be taken offline on 3 January. Further compounding their displeasure, 2K suggested to players, “Now is an opportune time to upgrade to WWE 2K23!”
WWE 2K22 is currently free on PlayStation Plus, and fans have enjoyed spending hours immersing themselves in its diverse matches via online play as well as its character creator. News that it won’t remain accessible causes great consternation among them.
“WWE games are one of the few where upgrading doesn’t necessitate buying new titles; therefore, this move by developer/publisher to force people to upgrade is somewhat disingenuous,” according to one Redditor.
But they make an essential point – older titles often provide enough content to satisfy players unless new iterations introduce entirely different match types or features. Players have also created classic and contemporary wrestlers in character creation options over time, thus leaving games dependent upon user-generated content, which will no longer exist after its removal from older titles.
Whatever their access method may be – PlayStation Plus subscription or total purchase price – fans of 2K Sports games have found this news disconcerting, and many are taking to Reddit in protest. One user commented, “I hope people begin to realize 2K is worse than EA,” while another expressed similar thoughts: “People should stop trusting 2K sports games. ”
“So, for $60, you purchase a game only to see it lose content two years later (it took three). Content that becomes permanently unavailable due to community creations being deleted? That is truly absurd!”
