Gamers often miss the classic God Of War hack-and-slash gameplay.
Video game consoles and software have changed immensely over the past 20 years; some fans yearningly miss what used to be. One such player recently expressed nostalgia for God of War’s original hack-and-slash gameplay as an example.
God of War premiered in 2005 and quickly went through three iterations (God of War II and III). Following an eight-year break between games in 2018’s rebooted God of War and 2022 sequel God of War Ragnarok, both series underwent significant modifications, such as setting and combat style changes.
God of War featured Kratos as an expert warrior from ancient Sparta who used his weapons in hack-and-slash combos in its original game. Still, in its subsequent adaptations and remakes, his combat now relies more heavily on close range tactical battles as well as Kratos’ Rage ability which transforms him into the Incredible Hulk without green hues – in other words transforming into less green Hulk! Despite being well received, not everyone loves its new battle style over its old one, which utilized hack-and-slash gameplay from before.

Another user noted how RPG genre changes dered his experience: “[…] RPG aspects really water down my experience too – as do its open world and RPG elements which add nothing new or add any real depth or variety, just d,raiany genuineness away. […] Additionally I just miss its old formula; hate that everything ne,eds to copy other popular titles (open world/RPG etc) or rebooteda into something it never should be to appeal to wider audience”.
Due to recent speculation by an industry insider regarding a sequel for God of War Ragnarok, won see another title in this franchise very soon. Whether or not they utilize either new or classic combat formula remains to be seen.
