I’m not sure about you, but I often find video game quotes touching. In fact, as I write this, I have one from Final Fantasy 14 tattooed onto my arm, so trust me, it speaks volumes to me personally! Apparently, not only am I drawn in by these gems – one student recently quoted Red Dead Redemption 2’s Dutch van der Linde in their college essay as well!

Red Dead Redemption 2, released five years ago, quickly established itself as one of Rockstar Games’s masterworks of storytelling. It boasted an exquisite narrative, leaving players feeling both heartbroken and profound when first released. Since its release, numerous video game analyses have explored Red Dead Redemption 2’s complex characters as well as any accurate life interpretations it might hold; one person even went a step further by including its themes in academic work!

Reddit user Immediate_Fox1930 recently took to Reddit in order to share an excerpt of their college essay, which contained a quote by Dutch van der Linde himself, as they wrote, quoting from “one of my favorite games… He says, and I quote, ‘It’s a man so in love with greed…he has forgotten himself and found only appetites.”

Although some took to comment threads to offer constructive criticism on the essay itself, others were delighted that someone took inspiration from Red Dead Redemption 2, sharing memorable lines or offering their own. Red Dead Redemption 2’s popularity remains as it remains popular today despite having been released in 2018, so people find ways to talk about it through critical analyses or college essays.
