Gaming can be an expensive hobby; with every new console generation comes increased prices for new titles.

On 20 October, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will set you back PS70 – the new standard price point for PlayStation 5. We reviewed it enthusiastically: “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 left me grinning from ear-to-ear as an incredible fantasy come to life, realizing like never before thanks to Insomniac Games’ stellar storytelling and impressive production values – not forgetting an outstanding visual style!” As with many sequels, gamers tend to spend PS70 more confidently when spending it on something they know well, while dropping PS70 on something unknown or unknown can prove more hesitant; many would rather spend it than spend it.

Reddit user Famaffe initiated this discussion by noting: “Over the past several days, I’ve been considering the recent price increases of new games; personally, for me, it makes it less likely I consider purchasing anything I am uncertain of – with recent examples being Mass Effect 3 (MW3) as an example). My decision about playing Call of Duty since Black Ops 2 in 2012 remains on a fence, Still, since its new standard price became standard, it reduced substantially my willingness to give it another go altogether.”

Many gamers agreed; one user replied, “I have become mostly patient when it comes to gaming unless something really excites me. There’s simply no point buying immediately when games often have issues that need patching later; waiting could actually get you a better product for a lower price… and it’s tough to argue against that,” while Vroomatic noted, “Yes. I honestly do not understand how people can afford these games with our current living cost crisis – even as someone fairly well off, justifying such purchases becomes harder every day!”

Many users cited turning to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus instead of purchasing new releases; most commenters stated they wait until games go on sale before buying any more titles. Let’s hope we won’t see further price spikes with the next-gen consoles!
