Second Extinction Delisted, Servers Shutting Down Soon

Systemic Reaction, developers of co-op dino survival shooter Second Extinction, have announced that both PC and Xbox versions of Second Extinction have been delisted. Systemic plans on closing all servers by 2024. Originally scheduled to debut out of Early Access/Xbox Game Preview this year, but due to delays, it never made it this far. Systemic has canceled everything altogether.

Systemic Reaction provided more details in their post on Steam that addressed why their decision had been reached earlier this week, including why Second Extinction could not reach full launch due to “show-stopping issues.”

Systemic Reaction stated, “Initially, we planned on releasing version 1.0 late last year, but some critical issues forced us back just prior to launch. Unfortunately, it became evident that our small team did not possess sufficient resources necessary for meeting quality targets and exiting Early Access/Game Preview, with its associated investment costs too great for them to bear.”

Second Extinction has already been delisted, yet those who own a copy may continue playing it for some time. Unfortunately, though, its design necessitated always-online gameplay even for solo play; once those servers shut off next year (via Twitter if you prefer), Second Extinction will no longer exist permanently – the developers confirmed this news via tweet and noted that adding a single-player/offline mode would require significant work that neither they nor its backers have resources available to them to accomplish.

Systemic Reaction, however, announced no lay-offs since Second Extinction’s delisting. Talent from those involved has since been distributed among other projects under Avalanche Studios Group–an encouraging sign compared to recent trends within gaming’s layoff-heavy climate. It was refreshing seeing no developers sacrificed to appease profit targets this year!
