Cliff Bleszinski (commonly known by his moniker CliffyB) believes his iconic series Gears of War would benefit from an infusion of God of War-esque elements, noting “Pharrell Spencer has my number”. “[This would be a] reboot similar to God of War”, states Bleszinski.

God of War enjoyed a successful reboot in 2018, shifting its settings from Greece to Scandinavia and giving its protagonist an offspring. Critical acclaim rolled in with great player praise – this technique could work wonders with Gears of War too?

Gears of War was once considered to be on par with Halo as far as Microsoft was concerned, yet over the years its significance has diminished considerably. Both series remain highly anticipated but Gears has taken on less importance over time; although creator Cliffy still considers Gears to be “near and dear to my heart”, with him recently noting his desire “to consult on future projects involving it.

But would a reboot work? Simply stated: it would. The early Gears games were straightforward action-adventures featuring aliens and meathead soldiers fighting each other to eliminate each other; cover shooting was first popularised through this series as were active reloading mechanics; popcorn-filled, emotional drama stories unfolded alongside chainsaw-armed duelling scenes for players competing esports tournaments featuring these games – it can only work.

Of course there’s room for reboots in modern gaming. Unfortunately, the series became convoluted over time, struggling to hold its identity; hence why reboots could work well – we could bring back familiar characters, revisit themes from an updated perspective while keeping things basic (soldiers against aliens). A reboot would definitely shake-up third-person action games!
