Silent Hill 2 remake will include Pyramid Head’s origin story
Update 7 November 2023 20:12: Konami has informed Eurogamer that their Best Buy listing regarding Silent Hill 2 remake’s potential origin story was inaccurate; according to Konami they have since updated it with correct details.
Original Story continues… The Konami Silent Hill series has long been revered in horror circles, and fans eagerly anticipate a remake of Silent Hill 2. Calling Silent Hill 2 an iconic game would be an understatement; not only for its visual scares, but for James Sunderland’s psychological trauma that left such an indelible mark since its initial release back in 2001.
Konami officially confirmed in October 2022 that work on the Silent Hill 2 remake is underway by employing Layers of Fear, Blair Witch and The Medium studio Bloober Team; whether this team can produce an edition worthy of such an iconic game remains to be seen.
As well, many were taken aback at Konami’s decision to remake Silent Hill: Shattered Memories rather than remake the first game released for PlayStation in 1999 – as critics and players weren’t particularly enthusiastic. I personally think remaking Silent Hill: Shattered Memories should have been their starting point instead; nonetheless it stands as it is for now.
Therefore, I find the Silent Hill 2 remake intriguing to watch unfold. Being one of my all-time favourite games, I hope it becomes an instant classic and am eager to witness how Bloober Team handles this project – plus seeing what new elements may be added without altering its core identity.
According to recent listings from US retailer Best Buy, Silent Hill 2 remake may receive new content in the form of an origins story for Red Pyramid Thing or Pyramid Head (Red Pyramid Thing in game terminology). As reported by Twitter user Bobvids via Bobvids Twitter page listing: “Fan favourite Pyramid Head makes his return with special origin story for fans to experience!”
Based on how we interpret that line, it could mean Pyramid Head will get his own origin story (something which would seem peculiar given his position as James Sunderland’s guilty conscience), although I personally favor an updated take of “Born from a Wish,” where Maria can play an active role before James ever arrives in Silent Hill.
At present, no exact release date for Silent Hill 2’s remake exists but it is expected that PC and PlayStation 5 versions should become available sometime within 2024.
