Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s failure has been blamed on Modern Warfare 2’s lower budget.
Since 2003, Activision has brought us new Call of Duty releases every year, with 2023 being no different.
Call of Duty games have long provided fans with what they require: an exciting single-player campaign, robust traditional multiplayer options and, depending on which subseries it falls into, Zombies! Unfortunately for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III’s single player campaign in particular, its reception from fans was less than enthusiastic.
“After an exciting year filled with amazing video game releases, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III manages to dampen our enthusiasm.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III achieved an initial Metacritic score of 55 upon its release and seemed set for success, according to critics and Metacritic users alike. Unfortunately it got even worse according to its fanbase; with users scoring Modern Warfare III at just 1.7 compared with critics scoring 53 overall making this title by far one of the worst-received Call of Duty titles ever!
So why has Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III been such an unfavorable review? Some critics point to its short campaign; others bring up that it may have started off as an expansion before becoming standalone game.
Twitter user Byeong Gyu Park posted a tweet containing screenshots taken from LinkedIn CVs belonging to developers working on Call of Duty titles; fans appear to blame the failure of Modern Warfare III on its $250 Million budget for MWII (2022).
“My guess would be Modern Warfare III’s budget was significantly smaller,” stated Tae Kim. Bendji Nzau was taken aback at such numbers; nevertheless they could contribute significantly to its failure as did reports that development timeframe was reduced with each game released each year.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III can now be played across PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
