Horizon Zero Dawn meets The Last Of Us in this underrated PlayStation Plus freebie offer.
Subscribing to PlayStation Plus provides us with access to a selection of video games we might otherwise overlook, like Days Gone which remains criminally underrated.
Days Gone was developed by Bend Studio and takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which much of humanity has transformed into bloodthirsty zombies known as Freakers. When released for PlayStation 4 in 2019, Days Gone earned itself some criticism due to technical challenges with running multiple Freakers on screen at one time as well as slow story progression; nevertheless it quickly became one of my go-to video game choices in recent memory!
“Enter a dog-eat-dog world devastated by an epidemic as Deacon St. John, drifter and bounty hunter extraordinaire. Assault your trusty drifter bike to navigate treacherous road surfaces while braving mindless Freakers as well as terrifying humans,” reads the description for this game. Unpredictable weather changes throughout day/night can pose incredible threats – everything wants your death!
Days Gone features an expansive open world reminiscent of Horizon Zero Dawn but less futuristic sci-fi; instead it featured barren wastelands filled with raiders and the undead. Like The Last of Us, Days Gone had an intricate crafting system similar to The Last of Us but that may be where any similarities end; perhaps I could liken Days Gone more like what might come about if Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead joined forces and produced something of their own?
Days Gone may not be perfect, but once its story starts to unfold, I hope it engrossing enough that you become as invested in Deacon’s story as he is in finding Sarah. Additionally, Days Gone can be found both PS Plus Extra and Premium subscription packages so if either applies, I highly suggest trying it out!
Days Gone has officially launched on PC and PlayStation 4. Furthermore, those lucky enough to own a PS5 may even enjoy running it smoothly!
