Killzone Composer Calls for Remaster, Expresses Doubts About New Entry
Joris de Man, the composer behind *Horizon Zero Dawn*, recently shared his thoughts on the future of the *Killzone* franchise. While he believes a remastered *Killzone* collection could be successful, he is less optimistic about the possibility of a new entry in the series.
The *Killzone* franchise, which began in 2004, was once seen as PlayStation’s answer to other first-person shooters like *Call of Duty* and *Halo*. Known for its gritty, war-torn sci-fi world and iconic Helghast enemies, the series had a significant impact on gaming. However, the franchise has been largely dormant since the 2013 release of *Killzone: Shadow Fall*, with Guerrilla Games moving on to the *Horizon* series.
De Man expressed uncertainty about a new *Killzone* game, citing the franchise’s bleak and dystopian tone, which may not align with modern player preferences. He suggested that modern sensitivities and the shift towards more casual, quicker games could make it harder for *Killzone* to resonate with today’s audience.
While some disagree with de Man’s assessment of the series’ tone, arguing that the real issue is the shift away from linear, story-driven first-person shooters, the recent success of games like *Helldivers 2* and *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* shows there is still demand for dystopian, war-driven shooters.
Ultimately, the future of *Killzone* lies with Sony and Guerrilla Games, though with the growing demand for the series and Sony’s interest in leveraging older IPs, a remaster or collection might not be entirely out of reach.
