Nintendo Switch 2 Almost Had a Different Name: “Super Nintendo Switch”
The Nintendo Switch 2 almost had a very different name, one that harked back to the company’s iconic past. Before settling on “Nintendo Switch 2,” the development team considered several options, including “Super Nintendo Switch,” which would have been a clear reference to the classic Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) from the early ’90s.
However, during an interview with Nintendo developers following the April 2 Switch 2 Direct, producer Kouichi Kawamoto explained that the name was ultimately discarded. The team felt that it would not fit, as the SNES could not play original NES games, unlike the Switch 2, which is fully compatible with games from the original Switch.
Takuhiro Dohta, senior director of Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning & Development Department, emphasized that the Switch 2 was designed to appeal to a broad audience, just like the original. Nintendo’s goal was to create a system that felt familiar while still offering a new experience.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, with pre-orders opening on April 9. Launch titles include *Mario Kart World*, *Cyberpunk 2077*, *Street Fighter 6*, and more.
