Hollow Knight Was Initially Planned to Be a “Very Small” Game
**Hollow Knight**, the critically acclaimed Metroidvania from **Team Cherry**, almost started as a much smaller project. In a recently revisited 2018 interview, developers **Ari Gibson** and **William Pellen** revealed that the original plan for the game was for it to be a “small thing,” with a funding goal of **AU$35,000** and a playtime target of just two hours.
However, the success of their **Kickstarter campaign** changed everything. With more funding rolling in, Team Cherry was able to significantly expand the scope of the game. The additional financial support allowed the developers to work on the project for **two years**, turning **Hollow Knight** into a sprawling, 20+ hour experience with unique areas and epic boss fights.
The game’s success has led to the highly anticipated **Hollow Knight: Silksong**, which has been in development for over **six years**. While its release date remains unconfirmed, a **2025** window was recently revealed, much to the excitement of fans eager for the next chapter.
