These nominations are equally as striking as the game itself, and given how much attention to detail that there is in this name, it’s nice to see some recognition for it.

Hades was commended for doing so many things right. It is not a sport that nailed only the gameplay mechanics, creating a fun experience or one that has a wonderful story paired with somewhat repetitive and uninspiring gameplay; rather, it does all. Likewise, its art direction, sound design, and story style complement one another so well that the couple would decry its nomination. Why is this so surprising is that it landed its place despite the rest of the top tier games that released this season, placing itself among the greats such as Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Ghost of Tsushima.

Hades – Greatest Story

Of all the awards, perhaps Hades’s best chance of winning is the Best Story award. Though Hades plays the somewhat cliche backdrop of Greek mythology, it does so with incredible tact. Each character feels fleshed out and real. The multiple branching dialogue options all help Zagreus, along with the player, get to know the individuals (and religions ) around them. Some gamers found their activities could affect the dialog in unexpected ways. By way of example, Megaera will scold Zagreus for using the Mirror of Night to provide himself the ability to beat her. Still, in the event the participant purges their mirror advantages, Megaera will remark this. This is a superb example of Hades’ writing doctrine.

Along a similar vein, it was reported that Hades has more words than the Odyssey and Iliad combined, a testament to just how massive the dialogue options are. In most cases, this could most likely be when quantity took preference over grade, but Hades manages to walk the line and give a ton of really great dialogue. All of this serves to make a narrative that draws the player in and makes them feel like part of it, and the experience is truly unlike anything else.
