Gearbox SoftwareNow hasBorderlands 3It may be in the rearview mirror, but its plans are larger than ever. Game developer and publisher Xerox, has confirmed that they are expanding and will add another studio in Montreal, Quebec. a gearbox three-studio company. Gearbox expects to grow its Montreal studio to 250 employees quickly, taking it to over 850 employees. Pierre-Andre Dery, Sebastien Caisse and Sebastien Caisse will lead the studio.
While it isn’t explicitly stated, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford describes that the new Montreal studio will be a place developers can work on either existing Gearbox franchises or “new, original ideas.” Dery agreed with this statement, stating that the new team will be working on the Borderlands franchise and the new IP. The team may support Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands development once it is launched, but no specific projects have been named.
It is exciting to hear that Gearbox Montreal will be working with new IP, especially when you consider the Battleborn (2016), the only new IP Gearbox released in the last 15 years. This could be why Gearbox’s Quebec City studio head decided to move to Montreal. They could be able to take charge of the next Gearbox big thing.
Co-director Caisse explained that Gearbox’s 2015 expansion into Quebec City was a “resounding failure” and why Gearbox will continue to grow in Quebec. He says that there’s a lot of talent in Montreal and that the city will allow Gearbox to grow to the studio’s needs rapidly. Gearbox confirmed that the studio would be formed with support from Montreal International and Investissement Quebec. These are both government investment agencies for the province and city.
The Montreal studio for Gearbox may not be the company’s last expansion, either. Pitchford was quoted as saying Gearbox is looking at international expansion opportunities. Montreal and Quebec City may be the first studios of a global network of Gearbox teams.
Gearbox’s Montreal studio will not be revealed for some time. It takes time to build a team. It takes a lot of time to build a team with 250 members. Gearbox Montreal is expected to support the initiative. Borderlands developments it grows. It will grow. Gearbox MontrealIf it does make it back in the news, however long ago, it might have a new IP that is worth keeping an eye on.
