Ubisoft is not in danger of being acquired by Microsoft or Sony
Ubisoft is riding high after a number of recent successes. Far Cry 6 is reportedly a success, while Assassin’s Creed: Ezio Collection was released yesterday for Nintendo Switch. The publisher has made a few questionable decisions. Despite opposition from Ubisoft developers and players alike, the company’s senior management has consistently doubled down on their decision to go ahead with Ubisoft quartz, a proprietary NFT program.
Ubisoft is a long-standing opponent to acquisitions. Ubisoft, which is valued at approximately $15billion by the market, though it has previously been resistant to acquisitions. The company would be able to make more decisions about its game development if it remained independent. The tides may have changed.
First, Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard at a record-breaking $69billion. Then Sony responded by purchasing Bungie at almost $4 billion. Now Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has retracted his previous stance and stated that Ubisoft is open for acquisitions. Senior analyst Daniel Ahmad reported that Guillemot stated on a conference call that Ubisoft would consider any offer to purchase.
Although the company is open to acquisition, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is ready to buy up right away. Guillemot wanted financial backers to be reassured that Ubisoft still has the funds to continue to operate independently. They are stating that all options are open for consideration. This is an extremely vague and neutral answer. However, it is striking that this goes against Ubisoft’s past staunch resistance. Could this be the start of a major acquisition by one of the big dogs, like Microsoft or Sony? We will only know the outcome when it comes to this.
